Visiting the Acropolis Museum

THE ACROPOLIS MUSEUM

The Acropolis as viewed from our Hotel

After our food tour in Athens on the 17th, we visited the Acropolis Museum the next day. A few years ago, we visited the Acropolis itself but didn’t have time for the museum. There is a wealth of information available about the museum online so that I won’t repeat many details here. However, I do have a few suggestions to share.

Buy your tickets online in advance HERE – 20 Euros

HERE is the official website for tickets – be careful of similar-looking, but unofficial, sites. The tickets are sold with specific entry times.

This way, you can skip the long line to buy tickets and go directly to the shorter entrance line. Which line is which isn’t immediately apparent, so it’s best to ask to be sure. The shorter line is probably the entrance line, but it’s better to confirm. It’s possible that advanced ticket holders won’t wait in line at all.

The entrance to the museum

Once you clear security, proceed directly to the entrance gates with your online ticket barcodes. No need to go to the ticket counter.

Bring AirPods or similar headphones for your smartphone to listen to the Audio Tour that is available online. You can download the tour app for your phone using the museum’s free Wi-Fi once inside the museum.

There is a suggested tour route that isn’t immediately obvious. Look for signs that describe the suggested path once you enter.  HERE is a map of the museum

Overlooking the first floor exhibit hall. Photography is not allowed while you are on the first floor, but photographing from this vantage point and the second and third floor is OK

Alexander the Great

There is a restaurant and a bookstore on the museum’s second floor

There is a gift shop on the first floor.

Plan on two hours
