Day 32
Ushuaia, Argentina
The fog that slowed our transit yesterday, had cleared by this morning as we approached the southern tip of South America. Around 7 AM we started to circle Hornos Island, transiting into the Pacific Ocean, moving south past Cape Horn, and then to the east back to the Atlantic Ocean. From there we continued north to the Beagle Channel before heading west once again toward Ushuaia, Argentina, the most southern city in the world.
Our last port was Montevideo on January 25th and today marks the end of 9 consecutive sea days, the longest stretch of sea days for the entire 128 days of this World Cruise.
Peter Cutler was the guest at Coffee Chat this morning, now back in the Explorers Lounge after the Captain’s Interview on the Main Stage yesterday. Peter has been performing on cruise ships for the last 9 years. He has been in show business his entire life. His first role was playing Charlie in “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” when he was 12. Later he won the role playing Marius Pontmercy in the West End production of Les Misérables which he performed for 2 years. His performance of “Empty Chairs and Empty Tables” was one of the highlights of his first show.
This afternoon Judy attended the lecture by Peter Carey of the Expedition Team titled: “Lifestyles of the Poor and Grimy” where he provided fascinating insights into the daily routines of scientists living and working in Antarctica.
We were scheduled to arrive in Ushuaia at 6 PM this evening, but we were delayed when the ship that was in our berth, the Hanseatic Inspiration, was delayed departing. Our arrival was delayed until 7 PM.
A steady stream of guests departed the ship once we were cleared, but many guests, including ourselves, stayed on the ship for the evening.
David Copperfield, put on his second show this evening, which was an entertaining mix of comedy, ventriloquism, and singing. He closed the show with a powerful rendition of “Con Te Partirò” (Time to say Goodbye) made famous by Andrea Bocelli.
